Each year, Inktober releases an official list of thirty-one prompts, one word for every day of October. I use the entire list as the framework for a single story, finding a place for each new word while keeping the plot moving from Day 1 through Day 31. Because I cannot choose the next word, the constraint becomes a collaborator: every prompt can bend the plot, introduce an object, or change what a character believes.
After writing each part of the story, I create an ink illustration shaped by that day’s prompt and the scene it inspired. I allow myself only one hour for each drawing. That limit keeps me from obsessing over the details, keeps the work immediate, and keeps me on track each day.
